Biomimetic optical directional microphone with structurally coupled diaphragms

چکیده
A biomimetic directional microphone based on structurally coupled diaphragms and a fiber-optic detection system is presented. The microphone design aims to mimic the fly Ormia Ochracea’s ear structure and capture its performance. Experiments show that the designed microphone amplifies the interaural time difference ITD by 4.4 times and has a directional sensitivity of 6.5 s /deg. An important finding is that one needs to utilize both the rocking and translational vibration modes to obtain the appropriate ITD amplification without sacrifice of directional sensitivity. This work can serve as a foundation for realizing fly-ear inspired miniature directional microphones. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.3043724

Fly-ear Inspired Miniature Directional Microphones: Modeling and Experimental Study
To address the challenges in developing miniature directional microphones, a novel micro-fabricated directional microphone inspired by the superacute ears of the parasitoid fly Ormia ocharacea is presented in this paper. It consists of two clamped circular silicon diaphragms structurally coupled by an oxide/nitride composite bridge. The separation between the diaphragm centers is 1.25 mm, about...

This paper reports a new approach to the fabrication of 3D structured diaphragms using integrated surface and deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) bulk silicon micromachining on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. The fabrication process has been applied to a 1 mm × 2 mm × 1.2 μm diaphragm designed for a biomimetic directional microphone. The membrane has two 200 μm × 380 μm × 20 μm silicon proof m...

Micromachined microphones that use a diffraction-based optical method for integrated interferometric detection of diaphragm displacement are described. With optoelectronics integration, this approach yields highly sensitive microphones in mm-cube volumes. Furthermore, the electrical port of the device, which is freed by optical detection, is used for electrostatic actuation of the microphone di...

In this paper, a novel design of a biology-inspired directional microphone is presented. This microphone consists of two clamped circular diaphragms, which are mechanically coupled by a connecting bridge that is pivoted at its center. A mechanics based model is constructed to determine the response of the proposed directional microphone to sound incident from an arbitrary direction. The simulat...
متن کاملDesign of a Biomimetic Directional Microphone Diaphragm
A miniature silicon condenser microphone diaphragm has been designed that exhibits good predicted directionality, sensitivity, and reliability. The design was based on the structure of a fly’s ear (Ormia ochracea) that has highly directional hearing through mechanical coupling of the eardrums. The diaphragm that is 1mm x 2mm x 20 microns is intended to be fabricated out of polysilicon through m...
